National Day of Racial Healing

Modeling the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation initiative, The Douglass proudly celebrates the National Day of Racial Healing. We are committed to uplifting our community and recognizing our shared humanity. The National Day of Racial Healing takes place every year on the Tuesday following Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Douglass Week

In February 2024, the Douglass Community Association proudly launched the first annual Douglass Week, a celebration of the organization’s rich history and its connection to the legacy of Frederick Douglass, whose birthday falls on February 14. This special week was marked by a historic milestone: a tribute from the State of Michigan, the first of its kind, recognizing the profound impact and contributions of the Douglass Community Association. Douglass Week serves as an opportunity to honor the enduring legacy of Frederick Douglass, while reflecting on the past, present, and future of the organization dedicated to uplifting the community.

Douglass Day of Racial Healing

On Jul 1, 2025 the Douglass celebrated our 106th anniversary by launching the Douglass Day of Racial Healing in partnership with ISAAC and the Lewis Walker Institute. On this day we will continue to bring members of the Kalamazoo community together to honor and celebrate the legacy of the Douglass Community Association.

Trunk or Treat

The Douglass hosts an annual Trunk or Treat event on Oct. 30, bringing together families and community members from the Northside neighborhood for a festive and safe Halloween celebration.

Veterans Day

In November 2024, the Douglass revived its tradition of celebrating and honoring local veterans. The Douglass was originally established to serve Black veterans, as discrimination and segregation prevented Black soldiers and veterans stationed at Fort Custer from gathering in white facilities. In recognition of this history and in gratitude to those who have served, we have reaffirmed our commitment to honoring the legacy of veterans in our community.

We thank Dr. Karika Parker for her ongoing work to document the stories and lives of local veterans in the Kalamazoo community, on behalf of the Douglass Community Association.

Annual Cold Weather Attire Drive

The Douglass Community Association is dedicated to spreading joy and warmth during the holiday season by hosting an annual Christmas party and cold weather attire for children in the community.

Family Thanksgiving

We host an annual feast during Thanksgiving Week for youth and families.
